Gateway 1 (Hazelwick Flyover) Mural

Gateway 1 (Hazelwick Flyover) Mural

Gateway 1 is the busiest entry point to Manor Royal, and possibly the town, encompassing the Hazelwick Flyover that connects Three Bridges to the Business District.

Around 30,000 vehicles travel between the Hazelwick flyover, Gatwick Road and the Manor Royal road roundabout in Crawley daily. Visitors and those making their regular commute will have seen the  enhancements that have already taken place, included landscaping with new trees, plants and railings, public art and formalised car parking in front of the Bank Precinct.

The aim of Hazelwick Flyover project is to install a large-scale artwork on the manor Royal side to transform this otherwise non-descript imposing flyover to create a more impressive and impactful first impression.

The brief

To design a meaningful and impactful artwork that celebrates the business district, its community and offering to those living and working in the South East, that:

  • Celebrates the unique heritage of Manor Royal, its people and its specialist industries creating a sense a place
  • Provides a welcoming arrival point at the gateway that strengthens Manor Royal’s identity as a leading business hub
  • Reflects Manor Royal’s professional, dynamic ambitious and vibrant working environment
  • Is a bold, contemporary and coherent design that is inclusive and celebrates connection and community
  • Complements the existing public art scheme and extends the art trail narrative
  • Generates ownership and pride within Manor Royal and the local area

The commission

Manor Royal BID, working with Creative Crawley, commissioned artist Jac Seifert to design the mural. Jac grew up in Sussex and went to school in Crawley, now living in Brighton. Through her studio Orakel Workshop, she creates digital, site-specific artworks, inspired by people and place. The mural is called “the place that does it all”.

Work details (programme)

Subject to weather conditions, the work will begin on 03 March 2025 until 31 March 2025

During this time the road will remain open but there will be lane closures.

Lane closures will be in effect at all times on the Northbound carriageway on the approach to Manor Royal.  On the Southbound side, when you exit Manor Royal, the land closure will only be in effect during the off-peak from 930am to 330pm to minimise disruption.
